Show event detailsBerthoud by the Book 2010 - "Three Cups of Tea"
Friday, March 19, 2010

Berthoud residents will read “Three Cups of Tea” this spring in the community’s Annual "Berthoud by the Book" program, 2010.

The book by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin focuses on how Mortenson helped set up schools for children in rural Pakistan and Afghanistan. Mortenson was climbing K2 in Pakistan, in 1993, when he came across a group of children sitting in the dirt writing with sticks in the sand. He made a promise to help them build a school. Since then he has established or significantly supports 131 schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan, which provide education to over 58,000 children, including 44,000 girls. The children had few education opportunities before those schools were built.

Making it a community read for all ages, there are adult and children’s versions of the book. Events for "Berthoud by the Book" 2010 kick off 6-8 p.m. Friday, March 19, at theBerthoud Community Library, 236 Welch Ave., with Nowruz — Persian New Year.

The event will include live music, dancing, Pakistani and Afghani food, a movie and yaks. From March 22 to May 1, there will be a yak hidden at various businesses in Berthoud. Every time a participant finds the yak they can enter a drawing. Prizes will be awarded weekly.

April 2010 events include: • April 7, 11 a.m.-noon, Listen to the Wind. Families can dress up and enjoy story time featuring the picture book version of “Three Cups of Tea,” as well as a tea party at the library. • April 8, 6-8 p.m., Journey to Pakistan. Doctoral student Ali Kemal from Colorado State University will host a presentation about the educational system in Pakistan. The film “The Miseducation of Pakistan” will be screened. • April 14, 10:30 a.m.-noon, Pakistan: A Personal View. Berthoud resident Wynne Maggi, author of “Our Women are Free,” will share her personal experiences of living in a small Pakistani village. • April 16, 6:30-8 p.m., Storyteller Family Night. Storyteller Bett Kopit will share traditional stories from Afghanistan and Pakistan. Refreshments will be served. • April 20, 6-8 p.m., The Art of Henna Tattoos. Teens and adults will learn about mehndi (traditional henna temporary tattoos) and Pakistani culture. The first 10 teens to register will get a free henna tattoo. Two discussions of the book will take place, the first one 10:30 a.m.-noon April 21 and the second 1:30-3 p.m. April 26. Berthoud by the Book participants also can contribute to Mortenson’s charity, Pennies for Peace, at the Berthoud Community Library March 19-April 30. National Volunteer Month
Celebrating People in Action

United Way of Larimer County’s Volunteer Center is encouraging the community to help them find volunteers or group of volunteers who go above and beyond in Larimer County for National Volunteer Month in April.

National Volunteer Month stems from National Volunteer Week that was started by former President Nixon in 1974.  That year, the president signed a proclamation establishing an annual celebration of volunteering.  Every president since then has signed a proclamation promoting the week in April each year.

This year, the Volunteer Center is asking the community to submit stories about extraordinary volunteers in Larimer County.  All stories will be reviewed and selected entries will qualify for the volunteer appreciation awards and other public recognition.  Volunteers themselves are also encouraged to narrate their own stories for submission.

Anyone interested in submitting an extraordinary volunteer story can go to www.uwaylc.org.  Submissions are due no later than Wednesday, March 31, 2010.

In addition to Celebrating People in Action, National Volunteer Month offers many volunteer opportunities and events in the community.  For more information, contact United Way of Larimer County’s Volunteer Center at 970-407-7066.
